Define Abstract Art
The literal meaning of the word Abstract means something you cannot define. Abstract art utilizes a visual language of form, colour or a line in order to create a composition. An Abstract artwork may seem to you like a painting of squares and lines, with colour blobs in between or it may seem as a sculpture that looks somewhat like giant mushrooms, etc. it is sometimes so bizarre in its style that people wonder what it could possibly mean. Abstract art relies upto a great extent upon the formal elements of colour, line, shape as well as texture in order to express the basic principles of design. The terms similar through not identical to abstract art are nonfigurative art, non-objective art and non-representational art.

Abstract art refers to modern painting and sculptures that leaves out the traditional European conception of art as the nature imitation. Mostly, in an abstract art the simplification of shapes and forms is all that matters. The origination of Abstract Art is believed to have been through cubist art in Europe. In India, Harappa and Mohenjodaro show strong evidences of the existence of abstract art. Even the frescoes of Ajanta or the bulls and elephants of Mahabalipuram could be referred to as early elements of abstract art. The tribal art of the Santhals and the Gonds can be considered another example. However this form of art acquired its identity in the decade 1910-20 and now it stands as the most characteristic form of 20th-century art.
